How to open a GeoPackage file online
- 1
Drop your .gpkg
Drag the GeoPackage onto the box above or click to browse. KML, GPX, GeoJSON, Shapefile, DXF, CSV and Excel files open too.
- 2
See every layer on the map
All vector layers are drawn together. When there's more than one, each feature keeps its layer name in a "layer" field.
- 3
Browse the attributes
Click any feature for its attributes, or scan the attribute table below the map.
What is a GeoPackage file?
GeoPackage (.gpkg) is the OGC's open GIS format: a single SQLite database file that can hold several vector layers, each with its own attributes and coordinate system. It's QGIS's default format and is replacing the Shapefile in many government and open-data downloads, because it's one file with no field-name or size limits.
Being a database, a GeoPackage can't be read in a text editor, and opening one usually means installing desktop GIS. This viewer reads it in your browser, reprojects each layer to latitude/longitude and draws them all on one map.
- Reads every vector (features) layer and reprojects it from the coordinate system stored in the file to latitude/longitude.
- Raster tile layers and attribute-only tables aren't shown. Layers in a custom coordinate system that can't be read in the browser need reprojecting to EPSG:4326 in QGIS first.
GeoPackage viewer — FAQ
- How do I open a GeoPackage without QGIS?
- Drop the .gpkg into the viewer above. It reads the file in your browser and shows every vector layer on a map with its attributes. Nothing to install.
- What is a .gpkg file?
- A GeoPackage: an OGC-standard SQLite database that stores GIS layers, their attributes and their coordinate systems in one file. QGIS saves to it by default, and many open-data portals publish it.
- My GeoPackage has several layers. Are they all shown?
- Yes, every vector layer is drawn on the same map. Each feature carries its layer name in a "layer" field so you can tell them apart in the attribute table.
- Why doesn't my raster GeoPackage open?
- The viewer shows vector features (points, lines and polygons). GeoPackages that only contain raster tiles, such as imagery or elevation, aren't supported.
- Is my GeoPackage uploaded?
- No. The database is opened in your browser with a WebAssembly SQLite engine; nothing is sent to a server.
- Can I convert a GeoPackage to a Shapefile or KML?
- Yes. After opening it, use the convert links below the map, for example GeoPackage to Shapefile, KML, GeoJSON, CSV or Excel.
