What is a KMZ file?
A KMZ file is a zipped KML file: the Google Earth format for placemarks, paths and shapes, compressed together with any icons or images it uses. Google Earth saves places as KMZ, and many surveying, drone, utility and property tools export it too.
Because it's a ZIP archive, you can't read a KMZ in a text editor, and many computers have nothing installed that opens it. This viewer unzips it in your browser, reads the KML inside and draws it on a map.
- Shows placemarks (points), paths (lines) and polygons with their names and extended data.
- Image overlays, 3D models and network links inside the KMZ aren't drawn. The viewer shows the vector features only.
KMZ viewer — FAQ
- How do I open a KMZ file without Google Earth?
- Drop it into the viewer above. It unzips the KMZ in your browser and shows its placemarks, lines and polygons on a map, with each feature's attributes. Nothing to install.
- Can Google Maps open a KMZ file?
- Not directly. Google Maps itself doesn't open KMZ files, but Google My Maps can import a KMZ of up to 5 MB into a layer. To just look inside one, this viewer is quicker.
- Is my KMZ file uploaded anywhere?
- No. The file is read and drawn entirely in your web browser; nothing is sent to a server.
- Why does my KMZ show fewer things than Google Earth?
- The viewer draws vector features — placemarks, lines and polygons. Image overlays, 3D models and network links (which load more data from a URL) aren't shown.
- How do I convert a KMZ to another format?
- After opening it, use the convert links below the map — for example KMZ to KML, GPX, CSV, Excel, GeoJSON or Shapefile.
