What is a KML file?
KML (Keyhole Markup Language) is the XML format behind Google Earth and Google My Maps, and an OGC standard read by most GIS and mapping apps. A KML file stores placemarks, lines and polygons, plus styling, folders and extended data such as descriptions or custom fields.
KML is plain text, but reading coordinates in XML tells you very little. This viewer draws the file on a map and lists every feature's data in a table.
- Shows placemarks, lines and polygons with their names, descriptions and extended data.
- Ground overlays, 3D models and network links aren't drawn.
KML viewer — FAQ
- How can I view a KML file online?
- Drop it into the viewer above. It's drawn on an interactive map in your browser, and every feature's attributes are listed below — no software or account needed.
- What's the difference between KML and KMZ?
- A KMZ is a KML file zipped together with its icons or images. Both hold the same kind of map data; this viewer opens either.
- Can I open a KML file in Google Maps?
- Google Maps can't open KML directly. You can import it into Google My Maps (up to 5 MB), or use this viewer to look at it instantly.
- Is the KML file uploaded to a server?
- No — it's parsed and drawn locally in your browser, so private data stays on your device.
