Import Shapefile

Import Shapefiles, GeoJSON and KML.

Bring existing GIS boundaries onto your map by importing Shapefile, GeoJSON or KML files — and export your layers back out just as easily.

Layers

What import shapefile does

  • Import Shapefile (.zip or .shp), GeoJSON and KML files
  • Imported shapes become a normal, styleable map layer
  • Records inside imported shapes are tagged automatically
  • Export layers back out as GeoJSON, KML or Shapefile
  • Bring existing GIS work in without recreating it
  • Round-trip boundaries between GeoMaps and other tools

Import Shapefile in GeoMaps

If your territories, regions or zones already live in a GIS file, you don't have to recreate them. Import a Shapefile (as a .zip or a .shp), a GeoJSON or a KML file and GeoMaps adds the shapes to your map as a layer you can style, label and use like any other.

Once imported, the layer behaves like a native one: records that fall inside its shapes are tagged automatically, so your existing GIS work immediately becomes usable territories. You can also export layers back out as GeoJSON, KML or Shapefile to round-trip data with other tools.

It's part of GeoMaps' layers tools, so it works hand in hand with the rest of your map.

Where import shapefile helps

Reuse GIS territories

A team that already maintains sales territories in a Shapefile can import them in seconds instead of redrawing every boundary.

Bring in custom boundaries

Import a GeoJSON of regions from a data provider and use them as catchments alongside your customer data.

Hand off to other tools

Export a layer you built in GeoMaps as a Shapefile or KML to share with a GIS analyst or load into another system.

Import Shapefile FAQ

Which file formats can I import?
You can import Shapefiles — either as a zipped archive or a standalone .shp file — as well as GeoJSON and KML files.
Can I get my layers back out of GeoMaps?
Yes. Layers can be exported as GeoJSON, KML or Shapefile, so you can round-trip boundaries with other GIS tools.
What happens to records inside an imported boundary?
Imported shapes work like any other layer, so GeoMaps tags the records that fall inside them automatically and you can filter and count by those areas.
Do I need GIS software to use my Shapefile here?
No. You upload the file and GeoMaps reads the shapes and puts them on the map for you — no desktop GIS required.
