How to make a drive-time map

  1. 1

Pick a travel mode and times

Drive, walk or cycle, and up to four times between 5 and 60 minutes, such as 15 and 30 minutes.

  2. 2

    Add a location

Type an address or click the map. The area you can reach in each time is drawn around it. Add up to five locations to compare them.

  3. 3

    Count, export or share

Upload your customer list to see how many are within each travel time, download the areas as KML or GeoJSON, or share a link.

What a drive-time map is good for

Delivery and service promises

Know which customers you can really reach in 30 minutes before you promise same-day service.

Site selection

Compare how many customers live within a 15-minute drive of each candidate store, office or clinic.

Field sales and territories

Build territories around what a rep can cover in a day, not around a straight-line radius.

Hiring and commuting

See which neighborhoods are within a reasonable commute of an office, by car, bike or on foot.

Just need distance? The free radius map draws mile or kilometer circles with no limits. For drive-time areas around your own customers, every day, use GeoMaps drive-time layers.

Drive time map: FAQ

What is a drive-time map?
A drive-time map, also called an isochrone map, shows every place you can reach from a starting point within a given travel time, such as 15 or 30 minutes by car. Unlike a radius, it follows the road network, so it stretches along highways and shrinks where roads are slow or missing.
What's the difference between a drive-time area and a radius?
A radius is distance as the crow flies: a perfect circle. A drive-time area is based on the roads, so a 30-minute drive can reach much further along an interstate than across a city center, a river or a mountain. For service areas and delivery promises, drive time is usually the more honest answer. For a simple distance circle, use the free radius map.
Does it include traffic?
No. The areas are calculated by Mapbox and don't reflect live traffic or the time of day, so allow some margin at rush hour.
Can I count how many customers are within a 30-minute drive?
Yes. Upload a CSV or Excel file with latitude and longitude columns (or a KML, KMZ or GeoJSON file). Each location shows how many of your points fall within each travel time, and you can download your list with the travel-time band added. The file stays in your browser.
Is the drive-time map tool free?
Yes, it's free with no signup. To keep it free there is a monthly limit on how many areas the tool calculates for all visitors combined; if it's reached, the tool is available again on the 1st of the next month. GeoMaps itself has drive-time layers with no such limit for your own maps.
Can I open the drive-time areas in Google Earth?
Yes. Export them as KML or KMZ and open the file in Google Earth or import it into Google My Maps. GeoJSON works in GIS tools like QGIS.
