How to convert GeoPackage to GeoJSON
- 1
Add your GeoPackage file
Drag and drop your .gpkg file onto the box above, or click to browse.
- 2
Convert in your browser
GeoMaps reads the GeoPackage and rewrites it as GeoJSON locally, on your device. The conversion is instant and your file is never sent anywhere.
- 3
Download your GeoJSON
Click download to save the converted .geojson file, or copy the output text. That's it — no account, no watermark, no limits.
Tip: GeoJSON is always latitude/longitude, so layers stored in a projected system (UTM, national grids) are reprojected automatically. Good for web maps, Mapbox or Leaflet, or for handing data to developers.
GeoPackage (.gpkg) is an open OGC standard that stores vector layers, attribute tables and map tiles in a single SQLite database file. It's the default save format in QGIS and is read by ArcGIS Pro, GDAL and most modern GIS software. Unlike a shapefile, one GeoPackage can hold many layers, has no 10-character limit on field names, and keeps everything in one file instead of a bundle of sidecar files.
Need the other direction instead? GeoJSON is the open standard for encoding geographic data in JSON. GeoJSON is an open standard (RFC 7946) for representing geographic features — points, lines and polygons — together with their attributes as plain JSON. It's the lingua franca of modern web mapping: readable by virtually every GIS tool, library (Leaflet, Mapbox GL, OpenLayers, deck.gl) and programming language out of the box. Its simplicity and human-readability make it the natural hub format to convert to and from.
Every vector layer in the GeoPackage is converted; with more than one layer, they're merged and each feature keeps its layer name in a "layer" field. Layers in a projected coordinate system are reprojected to latitude/longitude. Raster tiles aren't converted.

GeoPackage to GeoJSON — FAQ
- How do I convert GeoPackage to GeoJSON?
- Upload your .gpkg file using the converter above (drag & drop or click to browse). GeoMaps converts it to GeoJSON instantly in your browser and gives you a .geojson file to download. No software to install and no signup required.
- Is the GeoPackage to GeoJSON converter free?
- Yes — it's completely free with no usage limits, watermarks or account needed. We offer it as a free tool from GeoMaps, the platform for turning your data into interactive maps.
- Is my data private? Are my files uploaded to a server?
- No. The conversion runs entirely in your web browser using JavaScript — your file is never uploaded to any server. Because nothing leaves your device, it's safe for sensitive or confidential data and works even offline once the page has loaded.
- Can I convert GeoJSON back to GeoPackage?
- Yes. Use our GeoJSON to GeoPackage converter for the reverse conversion — every format on GeoMaps converts both ways.
- Anything to know about GeoPackage input?
- Every vector layer in the GeoPackage is converted; with more than one layer, they're merged and each feature keeps its layer name in a "layer" field. Layers in a projected coordinate system are reprojected to latitude/longitude. Raster tiles aren't converted.
- How large a file can I convert?
- Because conversion happens in your browser, the limit is your device's memory rather than a server quota — files up to tens of megabytes convert comfortably on a typical laptop. Very large datasets may be slower depending on your machine.
