How to convert DXF to Excel

  1. 1

    Add your DXF file

Drag and drop your .dxf file onto the box above, or click to browse. If the drawing isn't in latitude/longitude, choose its coordinate system first.

  2. 2

    Convert in your browser

GeoMaps reads the DXF and rewrites it as Excel locally, on your device. The conversion is instant and your file is never sent anywhere.

  3. 3

    Download your Excel

Click download to save the converted .xlsx file. That's it — no account, no watermark, no limits.

Tip: Handy for listing a drawing's points (survey stakes, poles, manholes) with their layer and label in a spreadsheet. Points get longitude/latitude columns; other shapes go into a WKT geometry column.

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is the open, text-based CAD format Autodesk created so drawings can move between AutoCAD and other programs such as BricsCAD, LibreCAD, MicroStation and QGIS. Surveyors, civil engineers, architects and utilities use it for site plans, parcel boundaries, and road and pipe layouts. A DXF stores lines, polylines, arcs, circles, points and text on named layers, in the drawing's own units and coordinate system. That's often a projected grid such as UTM or State Plane rather than latitude and longitude.

Need the other direction instead? Excel is microsoft Excel workbooks with latitude / longitude columns. Excel workbooks (.xlsx, and legacy .xls) are where most location lists start life — customer lists, store addresses, site inventories and survey results. For mapping, each row is one place with latitude and longitude columns plus any attributes you want to keep. Converting between Excel and GIS formats lets you send a spreadsheet to Google Earth or GIS software, or pull mapped data back into a workbook for reporting.

A DXF file doesn't record its coordinate system. Drawings in latitude/longitude convert directly; for projected drawings (UTM, State Plane, national grids) choose the coordinate system or EPSG code in the converter. Arcs, circles and splines become short line segments, closed polylines become polygons, and dimensions and hatches are skipped. Binary DXF and DWG files need saving as ASCII DXF first.

Excel files are read from the first worksheet, and each row needs latitude/longitude columns (or a WKT geometry column). On export, points get longitude/latitude columns and lines or polygons are written to a geometry column as WKT.

DXF to Excel — FAQ

How do I convert DXF to Excel?
Upload your .dxf file using the converter above (drag & drop or click to browse). GeoMaps converts it to Excel instantly in your browser and gives you a .xlsx file to download. No software to install and no signup required.
Is the DXF to Excel converter free?
Yes — it's completely free with no usage limits, watermarks or account needed. We offer it as a free tool from GeoMaps, the platform for turning your data into interactive maps.
Is my data private? Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your web browser using JavaScript — your file is never uploaded to any server. Because nothing leaves your device, it's safe for sensitive or confidential data and works even offline once the page has loaded.
Can I convert Excel back to DXF?
Yes. Use our Excel to DXF converter for the reverse conversion — every format on GeoMaps converts both ways.
Anything to know about DXF input?
A DXF file doesn't record its coordinate system. Drawings in latitude/longitude convert directly; for projected drawings (UTM, State Plane, national grids) choose the coordinate system or EPSG code in the converter. Arcs, circles and splines become short line segments, closed polylines become polygons, and dimensions and hatches are skipped. Binary DXF and DWG files need saving as ASCII DXF first.
Anything to know about Excel output?
Excel files are read from the first worksheet, and each row needs latitude/longitude columns (or a WKT geometry column). On export, points get longitude/latitude columns and lines or polygons are written to a geometry column as WKT.
How large a file can I convert?
Because conversion happens in your browser, the limit is your device's memory rather than a server quota — files up to tens of megabytes convert comfortably on a typical laptop. Very large datasets may be slower depending on your machine.
